To start talking about “engineering projects”, first let’s begin by defining what a “project” is. To do this, we must consider the definition established within the “ISO” standards, which state that “a project is defined as a unique process consisting of a set of coordinated and controlled activities with start and end dates, undertaken to deliver a product that meets specific requirements, within the constraints of time, cost, and resources.”
In simpler terms, this means that a project is a process that must align with the available time and budget. It should provide a solution to a particular need or improvement in an area, whether through modification, maintenance, or creation.
The main characteristics of an engineering project are as follows:
– It must have identifiable, real, and available start and end dates.
– A project should have a general objective and specific objectives, aimed at solving a problem or improving an area (meaning that a project must have a purpose for its execution).
– It is unique.
– It has a person responsible for it, who would be the “project manager.”
What is an Engineering Project?
– It involves planning and organizing tasks to be carried out, with interdependencies often present between them.
– A project requires time, resources (both human and technological), and quality.
– Due to its ability to address a need or improve an area (as well as enhance the quality of life), it becomes an instrument of change.
Engineering Projects
Projects can be applied to virtually any field of human knowledge. In this case, we will focus on their application in engineering. In the field of engineering, there is even a discipline known as Engineering Projects.
An engineering project differs primarily from other types of projects due to the presence of professionals, specifically engineers, among whom one typically serves as the “project manager.” This individual possesses the qualities, knowledge, and experience required for the project’s successful execution.
Engineering projects span a wide range of areas, including but not limited to mining exploration, space exploration, genetics, robotics, and biotechnology. These projects require expertise in various engineering disciplines. One of the oldest examples of engineering projects in human history is construction projects.
Types of Engineering Projects
The types of projects in engineering vary depending on the specific engineering field being explored. Here are some examples:
– Research Project: In engineering, a research project can also be categorized as a scientific project. It applies to any field of human knowledge and seeks to gain new insights into an underexplored area of engineering or one with unanswered questions.
– Construction Project: Typically overseen by civil engineers, and sometimes industrial engineers, these projects aim to expand civilization through civil construction works or improve the quality of life in a region, town, or existing city.
– Software Development Project: These projects are usually led and managed by software engineers but may also involve professionals from related engineering branches such as systems engineers, programming engineers, and telecommunications engineers. Their purpose is to enhance technology by creating a computer system capable of performing specific operations or a set of operations to facilitate certain tasks.
– Implementation or Maintenance Project: This type of project is common across various engineering disciplines. Its significance arises from the need to enhance, maintain, or repair physical or digital systems. Whether it’s buildings, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or digital software, all require maintenance or improvement to adapt to the evolving needs of society. In the case of digital technologies, they must evolve with hardware improvements to enable new capabilities that were previously impossible due to limited equipment capacity. In mechanical or construction fields, physical systems deteriorate over time due to factors like humidity, erosion, earthquakes, and more, necessitating improvements and maintenance.
